Living in the moment

In today’s fast-paced society, it’s a worthy goal, although the notion may seem abstract. Here are some concrete ways to learn to appreciate every moment of your daily life.

 

Societal pressure

In today’s supercharged society, we hear the message over and over: live a successful life. We end up being so scared of messing up our lives that we can’t help having regrets. I should have done something different… And we’re anxious about tomorrow: Will I be able to pay my bills? Will I be able to make my dreams come true? Will I live up to what’s expected of me?

But when your mind is stuck in the past and the future, what happens to the present? It slips away without really being enjoyed. We listen without really listening. We eat without tasting the flavours. Admitting you aren’t really living in the moment  is a step in the right direction. Here are a few things you can do to be more connected to the “here” and “now.”

 

1- Be fully aware

A piece of chocolate that melts in your mouth, the comforting warmth of a bath, the words to your favourite song… We’re naturally equipped with amazing senses, so take the time to appreciate the small sensations that surround us – a delicious meal at a restaurant or something as ordinary as an evening walk.  

 

2- Express gratitude

It’s past midnight and you’re sitting by the fire, deep in conversation with your best friend. It’s wonderful – you’re in the right place at the right time with the right person. Why not say so? Yes, say it to yourself, but say it out loud too. “This feels nice, I’m really enjoying being here with you.” Expressing gratitude when you feel happy is one way to connect directly with the present moment.

 

3- Stop planning for tomorrow

It’s great to have projects, but constantly living in the future can have negative effects too. Sometimes it’s impossible to savour the present moment because your plans for the weekend are monopolizing your thoughts. Plus, excessive planning can be a sign of underlying anxiety. So while you’re sitting on the porch with your sweetie in the evening, it’s fine to simply enjoy the moment without thinking about your grocery list or the errands you have to run tomorrow.

 

4- Live your dreams

We keep some dreams hidden deep down inside, thinking “Maybe one day…” But why wait? If you’re not completely satisfied with your life, then go for it now! If you want to learn to play the piano or go to Ireland, take a concrete step: find a teacher or start saving for your trip. If you don’t like your job, look for another. Do it now, not in 10 years!
