End-of-winter treatment: 5 all-natural tips for radiant skin

Even if the frigid cold doesn’t stop you from playing in the snow, it can really do a number on your usually smooth skin. As we get ready for the return of warmer, sunnier weather, may we suggest some great all-natural, home-made ideas and organic local products for taking care of your skin the natural way while respecting the planet we live on?

1. A super-quick DIY exfoliant

Say goodbye to dead, flaky skin as we prepare to usher in the spring. There’s nothing better than a good exfoliation, and taking the DIY route keeps it simple. You don’t have to take out your wallet or even leave the house to make this exfoliant. Just mix a tablespoon of honey with a teaspoon of sugar. Apply to your face, massage gently, and rinse off with warm water. It’s simple, natural and cheap – what more could you ask?

2. Avocado makes a great moisturizer

Any cocooning day worth its salt must include a face mask! Forget about the commercial masks that are loaded with chemicals and go for a natural choice. You couldn’t get more organic than a detox mask made from avocado! Chances are you have all the ingredients in your fridge right now. Just mix a tablespoon of homey, a tablespoon of plain yogurt and half a ripe avocado. Leave on your face for 30 minutes, then rinse off. How simple was that?

3. Chemical-free sunscreen

The sun can really wreck your skin. UVA rays cause aging, and UVB rays can cause sunburn and cancer. With the return of the good weather, we’ll be heading outdoors for the whole day. Protect your skin – it’s crucial! Choose a sunscreen without chemical additives. Sunscreens from Druide and Kiss My Face are good choices, non-toxic and environment-friendly. Putting a physical barrier between you and the sun is just as effective as plastering your skin with chemicals!

4. Bye-bye, bacteria!

Spread bacteria on your face? Ugh – no, thanks! That’s why you really need to clear out your beauty products at least once a year. What to throw out when? Basic rule: if a product starts to smell different or the texture or colour changes, toss it! Here are some examples of shelf life: 3 months for mascara,  6 months for concealer, and 9 months for foundation, face cream, exfoliant or makeup remover. All that makeup you’ve had hanging around for years – out!

5. Salad fights UV rays

Did you know that some foods can protect you from the sun? Although further research is necessary to confirm the beneficial effects, we do know that some foods hold potential for protecting the skin from UV rays. That would be food that’s high in flavonoids, like grapes, berries, cranberries and tea, along with foods that are rich in carotene, such as orange fruit and veggies, tomatoes and dark green veggies. Also, make sure you drink lots of water every day to help moisturize your skin. It’s certainly worth a try!

Now you’re all set for spring and that wonderful feeling of sunshine on your smiling face – enjoy!
